This is the most common side hustle problem. You've built something — a store, a service, a product — but you haven't told enough people about it in a compelling enough way.
Fix: Count how many new people see your offer every week. If it's under 50, that's the problem. Fix the distribution before fixing anything else. Post more, tell more people, run one paid campaign, appear on someone else's platform.
Problem 2: Your offer isn't specific enough
'I do graphic design' doesn't make money. 'I design Shopify product photos for e-commerce brands in the fashion niche, starting at $200/month' does. Specificity creates trust and makes it easy for the right buyer to say yes.
Fix: Niche your offer until it feels uncomfortably specific. You can always expand later. A specific offer that targets the right 1,000 people beats a generic offer targeting 1,000,000 people.
Problem 3: Pricing too low
Counterintuitively, too-low prices can kill sales. Very cheap prices signal low quality to buyers, make it impossible to invest in marketing, and attract buyers who are difficult to work with. Low prices also don't make you enough money to stay motivated.
Fix: Research what premium providers in your niche charge. Position yourself in the middle to upper range and justify the price with specific results and social proof. You'll close fewer deals at higher prices and make more money.
Problem 4: Not asking for the sale
Many people build the capability and the presence but never directly ask someone to buy. They wait for people to figure it out themselves.
Fix: Send 10 direct messages or emails to people who might want your service or product. Not a pitch — a genuine 'I noticed X about your situation, here's how I might help, would that be useful?' Personalized outreach converts at 10–30%. Passive waiting converts at near 0%.
Problem 5: Inconsistent effort
A side hustle that's worked on intensely for two weeks and then abandoned for three weeks will never gain momentum. Every business has a lag between action and visible results — but if you quit before the results arrive, you'll never see the payoff.
Fix: Commit to a minimum viable weekly action: post 3 pieces of content, send 5 outreach messages, spend 30 minutes improving the offer. Do it every week for 90 days. Track it. Evaluate honestly at 90 days whether the model is viable.
