How to Sell Digital Products on Shopify in 2025 (Step-by-Step)

Updated April 20257 min readFree guide

Digital products have the best economics of any online business: 100% margins after the first copy, instant delivery, and no inventory. Here's how to set it all up on Shopify.

Why Shopify for digital products

Gumroad and Payhip are simpler for a first digital product. But if you want a real brand — your own URL, full design control, email list ownership, upsells, and bundle pricing — Shopify is worth the setup.

The key advantage is customer ownership. Every buyer's email goes into your Shopify list. You can market to them forever. Gumroad keeps that data locked in their platform.

Setting up digital delivery

Install the free Shopify Digital Downloads app from the App Store. In the app, attach your file (PDF, ZIP, MP4, etc.) to your product. When a customer completes checkout, Shopify automatically sends a download link to their email.

For courses or larger content libraries, consider Sky Pilot (paid app) which creates a secure download area rather than a time-limited link.

Product types that sell well

High performers in 2025: Notion templates ($5–$49), Canva templates and design packs ($9–$49), ebooks and guides ($9–$97), social media content calendars ($15–$49), Lightroom and Capture One presets ($19–$79), AI prompt packs ($7–$27), Excel/Google Sheets tools ($9–$69).

The sweet spot is $19–$47 — high enough to feel valuable, low enough to be an impulse purchase.

Writing product descriptions that convert

Your product page needs: a clear headline that describes the outcome ('The 30-Day Content Calendar That Plans Your Entire Month in 2 Hours'), bullet points of specific deliverables, a preview image or mockup, social proof if you have it, and a clear FAQ section.

Create a professional mockup in Canva — a digital product displayed on a laptop, phone, or printed mockup converts significantly better than a flat file screenshot.

Pricing and bundles

Start with a single product at a clear price point. Once you have 5+ products, create bundles — 3 related products bundled at 60% of full price. Bundles dramatically increase average order value and are easy to set up with Shopify's built-in discounts.

Consider a 'complete toolkit' at the top of your price range that includes everything. Having a $97–$147 anchor makes your $27 products look like obvious value.

Marketing your digital store

Content marketing is the highest-leverage channel for digital products. Create YouTube videos, TikToks, or blog posts that teach the topic your product solves — then naturally mention the product as the next step.

For a Notion template business: post YouTube videos about Notion setups. For an ebook about freelancing: post Instagram Reels with quick tips from the book. Every piece of content is a funnel.
