How to Sell Ebooks Without Stripe in 2026 (Step by Step)

Updated April 20267 min readFree guide

Stripe isn't required to sell ebooks online. Here's how to set up a functioning ebook business with PayPal-based alternatives — step by step.

What you need to sell an ebook (no Stripe)

You need: (1) your ebook as a PDF file, (2) a Gumroad or Payhip account (free, no age requirement on Gumroad), (3) a PayPal account to receive payouts, and (4) a way to tell people your product exists.

Total setup time: 30–60 minutes from account creation to first product live.

Step 1: Create your ebook in Canva

Open Canva, search for 'ebook' templates, and pick one that fits your topic. Replace the placeholder content with your writing. Most ebooks that sell well are 20–80 pages — specific, actionable, and focused on solving one clear problem.

Export from Canva as PDF (Print) for maximum quality. This PDF is your sellable file.

Step 2: Set up on Gumroad

Go to Gumroad.com and create a free account (email only, no age verification). Click 'New Product' → 'Digital Product' → upload your PDF → set a price → write a product description → add a cover image (make this in Canva — it's the thumbnail buyers see).

Gumroad automatically handles file delivery — when someone buys, they receive a download link immediately. No manual steps.

Step 3: Connect PayPal for payouts

In Gumroad's settings, connect your PayPal account for payouts. Gumroad pays out weekly or on demand for accounts over a minimum threshold.

If you're under 18: set up PayPal with parental consent (check your country's rules), or have a parent open the PayPal account and receive payouts to it.

Step 4: Price your ebook correctly

Ebook pricing on Gumroad: $7–$47 works best for most niches. Below $7, buyers don't value it enough to use it. Above $47, they expect course-level depth.

Sweet spot for a beginner ebook: $17–$27. At this price, buyers feel they got real value and you build reviews quickly. Raise the price once you have 10+ positive reviews.

Step 5: Getting your first sales

The fastest path to first sales without a following: post about your ebook in relevant Reddit communities, niche Facebook groups, or Discord servers where your target audience hangs out. Be genuine — participate in the community first, then mention your product naturally.

Longer term: build a small email list through Beehiiv (free, write about your topic weekly) and launch to subscribers. An email list of 200 genuinely interested subscribers converts better than 2,000 random followers.
